A few weeks ago I got a call in the night that Kramer had been showing signs of lameness and didn’t eat in the morning! This was not well received but was an opportunity to abound in grace and be patient with others.
We never could figure out what happened exactly but we think he probably just hurt himself kicking at one of the horses. I say this now pretty confidently after watching him with our new bull Buster!
I brought him over the my house and put him on stall confinement to limit his movement. It allowed me to grab the compression wraps that used to belong to Minka when she was injured.
The next day I started icing his leg, something I remembered MS State had done with Minka. They had told me that she was a wonderful patient that had no reservations to this routine.
However, that was not my findings with Kramer. The first day we both made it clear that we were going to do what we wanted. He kept kicking and swatting me in the face and I ended up tying him on a short lead to the barn!
But then, as my frustration began to rise, I decided I should pray about this. Though I wasn’t certain icing his leg was the best thing for him, it was the best of my knowledge and he was under my care. I asked that I would have patience with him, since he is the Lord’s creation and that God would allow Kramer to be willing.
Amazingly and despite my weak prayer that had a hint of unbelief, the next five minutes were actually pleasant and we iced his leg!
After a week of this Kramer was beginning to put weight on his leg again and this was also the time when I stopped icing his leg. As his mobility increased his patience with an ice bucket decreased!
He is now been retired and is currently living a quiet and peaceful life in my backyard. It has been a very fun time as he loves attention and greets me every time I come home and I love it too!
Now I’m just waiting for Kramer to like his new pasture-mate!
